Postbiotic HK L‑137 has been studied for its role in gut balance, immune function, and skin moisture, and notified to Food Standards Australia New Zealand for use in general level health claims.

Gut Balance

As a postbiotic, HK L‑137 is designed to support a healthy gut environment without needing to survive as a living culture.

Immune Function

Human trials link daily intake to normal immune function, including changes in immune cell activity over 12 weeks of use.

Skin Moisture

A randomized, placebo‑controlled study found associations between intake and measures of skin hydration and barrier function.

How the gut to skin signal is thought to work

The link between HK L‑137 and skin moisture is proposed to run through the immune system rather than the skin directly. Research on the strain has found it can induce interferon‑gamma (IFN‑γ), a signalling molecule that in turn is understood to induce and regulate the skin’s own production of hyaluronic acid — the molecule most responsible for holding water in skin tissue.

1

HK L-137 intake

Heat-killed L. plantarum L-137 interacts with the body's immune signalling pathways.
2

IFN-γ induction

Studies report that HK L-137 can induce interferon-gamma, a signalling molecule that acts as a messenger between immune cells.
3

Hyaluronic acid regulation

IFN-γ is, in turn, understood to induce and regulate hyaluronic acid production in the skin, supporting hydration and barrier function.
